Install XP on Gateway ML6230 and the Drivers

Steal from SD.

Installing Windows XP :
Best option is to use a USB Floppy drive with the correct SATA drivers (link below) and hitting F6 at the beginning of your install. If you don't have access to one, then you need to slipstream the SATA drivers onto an XP Disc.
Nlite <---- slipstreaming program
1 blank CD
Your Windows install CD
Sata drivers for your laptop
The Sata drivers you want should extract to "C:\cabs\D20035-001-001\F6 Floppy X86"
Point Nlite at that directory at the proper time and it will come back and give you a list of included drivers.
Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH) is the one that you are looking for.
*** if you have a USB floppy, copy the contents of "C:\cabs\D20035-001-001\F6 Floppy X86" to that floppy, hit F6 when prompted and select Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH) from the list.
You might also need to install some MS stuff, but Nlite will let you know when you are installing it.
It's pretty self explanatory from there. Start Nlite, point it to your Win CD, create a dir for it to write to, when given a list of taks that you want to do, select DRIVERS as well as Create Bootable ISO, point it the drivers that you downloaded and extracted and let it do it's work from there.
Burn the resulting ISO to a cd
You shouldn't need to slipstream an XP SP2 cd - it should recognize SATA.
As for the drivers, look up the Vista 32 bit drivers for the ML6230. Then match up those with the corresponding XP drivers
The wireless driver can be found at http://www.opendrivers.com/driver...nload.html
On Gateway's site, under driver keyword search, type in:
D00510-001-003 to find the modem driver
D00758-001-001 to find the audio driver
The intel drivers are on intel's site

Synaptics drivers

Intel Graphics Driver

Somebody please edit with the ethernet controller

Here ya go happy:-)
Work with me here. This driver is for a different Marvel Yukon adapter (a gigabit one) but it works just fine with the one on this laptop. I have been using it since yesterday.
On Gateway's site, under driver keyword search, type in:
D00516-002-001
Download, extract, locate and run SetupYukonWin.exe in C:\cabs\D00516-002-001\windows\InstallShell and you are all set to go.

Install XP on SATA without a floppy

Just grabbed the Gateway deal at BB for my sister and tried to install XP on it. The laptop is too "fancy" and have a SATA drive.

Here is a great instruction. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml

Basically, you need download a freeware Nlite.

Copy your XP CD to your HD.

Then open Nlite, select the XP folder.

Add the SATA driver you need. Be careful here. You can find the SATA driver both from the HD manufacturer website and your desktop/laptop manufacturer website.

I tried the HD manufacturer one first. But it didn't work. I think the things matters here is the motherboard and we should get the one on laptop manufacturer website.

Then burn the CD. That's it!

No floppies any more. Remember when I bought my Dell 9100, I borrowed a USB floppy (it is amazing that someone even has a USB floppy. :) and that was how I installed the OS.

Hope this will be helpful for guys who have bought a new Vista laptop and would like to downgrade to XP.
