Doing experiments and getting unexpected results is the normal life for scientists. My labmate made a sample, which didn't turn out very well. He was pretty upset. I tried to encourage him and taught him a Chinese saying "treat a dead horse as if it is still alive (死马当活马医)". So the meaning is since it is dead already, if you treat it, it won't go any worse. Just try your best. He loves this "dead horse" saying. "Treating dead horse" becomes our team spirit.

In the picture, the image on the horse are the particles we make every day. Our dead horse is just our particles.

Talking with other American friends, I found they have a similar saying too, "don't beat a dead horse", which means since it is dead, don't waste your time to beat it. This may reflect different cultural backgrounds. I think Chinese people are more stoical. On the other hard, Americans are tending to "move on, don't waste your time here, try something new". This analysis might be non-sense. But it is interesting to see that people from different countries treat dead horses differently.
